4 Myths About Exercising and Aging

As we get older, it is normal to fall into a routine, the consequence being that this usually leads to exercise being eliminated from our daily practices. The truth is, however, that an active lifestyle is more important now than ever no matter how hard it may be to get moving.

Regular exercise has positive effects on your mind, mood, and memory. A boost in energy protected the heart and managed pain and illness symptoms being just some of the many added benefits to an active lifestyle.

Exercise is a challenge at any age--but it doesn’t get any easier as we get older. Our aches and pains often cause us to feel discouraged but before you take these as good reasons to slow down, know that this is all the more reason to start moving.

So, before you begin to find any more excuses we decided to give you all the facts.

Myth 1: I’m too old to start exercising

Fact: It is never too late to start exercising. Adults who become active later in life often show greater physical and mental improvements than their younger counterparts. Those who start later in life, are even less likely to become injured because they won’t be encumbered by the same sports injuries that many regular exercisers experience later in life.

Myth 2: I have to much pain and am too weak

Fact: Becoming active can be a great way to manage pain, improving not only your strength but self-confidence as well. Start off gently and soon you will gain a newfound vitality that you didn’t know you were missing.

Myth 3: Exercise puts me at risk of falling down

Fact: The strength and stamina you gain from regular exercise helps prevent loss of bone mass and improves balance. This means that exercise is making you less likely to fall.

Myth 4:It’s too frustrating: I’ll never be the athlete I once was

Fact: Changes in bone density, metabolism, and muscle mass mean that strength and performance levels inevitably will decline with age, but this does not mean that you can no longer achieve the same benefits from physical activity or improve your health.
